Roger Lavallee Obituary

Sturbridge ~ Roger J. Lavallee, 79, was surrounded by his loving family when he died on Saturday, December 9, 2023, after a long illness, at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital - Westborough.

Roger is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jo-Anne (Gauthier) Lavallee, whom he married on July 17, 1965.  He is also survived by their children: 3 sons, Michael Lavallee of Southbridge, Jason Lavallee of Worcester, and Christopher Lavallee of Southbridge, and 3 daughters, Kathleen Twomey and her husband, Thomas, of Medford, Jennifer Griffin of Sandwich, and Stephanie Lavallee and her partner, John Argrow, of Longmont, CO; 2 grandchildren, James and Liam Griffin; as well as his cousins, Paul Laliberte, Pauline Servant and Diane Gagnon.  Roger was predeceased by their daughter, Michelle Renèe Lavallee, who died January 25, 1988.

Born in Southbridge, MA, on January 17, 1944, Roger was the only child of Pierre Adelard and Olivine L. (Talbot) Lavallee.  Roger graduated as class valedictorian in 1962 from Southbridge High School.  Graduating with high honors from all, he earned his Associate's Degree from Worcester Junior College, his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from American International College in Springfield, and his MBA from Nichols College in Dudley.  Roger worked for the E.J. Martin and Company for 20 years, serving as their Controller and Vice President. He was the Staff Accountant and Office Manager at Yankee Spirits for three years, and had has his own book keeping and tax accountant services for many years. Roger retired from Wachusett Lumber Company in 2006, where he served as the Assistant Controller.

Roger and Jo-Anne made Southbridge their home for many years, moving to Sturbridge ten years ago.   He was a devout parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church in Southbridge, until the church’s closing.  He then became a parishioner of St. John Paul II Parish.  Roger was very active in his church: he belonged to the League of Sacred Heart and was a member of Sacred Heart's Finance Committee and Parish Council, their Bazaar Committee, the Bishop’s Fund, and the Youth Council, and also served as a lector and volunteered in the church’s food pantry. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Roger was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his family meant the world to him.  He was an avid gardener and loved working in his yard.  Some of his favorite times were vacationing at the beach and the White Mountains with his family. He loved listening and dancing to music - especially the songs of the 1950s and 1960s - and singing old French songs. Roger also loved gatherings: playing cards with his friends, having big cookouts and clambakes, and especially hosting family gatherings around the holidays.
