Southbridge...Pauline Exena Metras, 89 of Southbridge, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2020 following a period of failing health. She was born on April 19, 1931 in Southbridge, to the late Louis R. and L. Exena Trembley Metras. After graduating from Mary E. Wells High School in 1949, she attended Boston College where she received her nursing degree. She worked as a nurse and lived in Boston for many years before returning to college at Boston University to obtain a master’s degree in medical coding. In 1993 she returned to Southbridge to live full time. She continued working in Boston taking the train from Worcester every day to work in the medical coding field until she retired at age 78.
Pauline enjoyed nature and was particularly fond of the Audubon Society. She was an avid bird watcher and traveled the world on birding expeditions. She would often entertain family and friends with her vast knowledge of bird habits and sounds. She could answer any birding question you had.
Pauline always took pleasure in the fine arts. She enjoyed attending the Boston Symphony Orchestra and many operas throughout the years.
Pauline was a lifelong learner. She enjoyed completing all of the daily newspaper puzzles. She was proud to share the knowledge she obtained while taking adult learning class through Assumption College’s WISE program and continued her courses until the fall of 2019.
Pauline is predeceased by her brother, Arthur R. Metras and her sister Suzanne M. Metras. She is survived by her sister in law Ann Metras, her nephews Michael Metras and his wife Barbara and Stephen Metras and his wife Joan and her nieces Paula Metras and Nancy Tothill and her husband David. She is also survived by many grand nieces and nephews and their spouses and children who will miss her dearly.
