Norman Mathieu Obituary

Southbridge/Charlton...Norman R. Mathieu, 98, also known as "Norm", passed from this world on January 16, 2023, at The Overlook in Charlton. HIs wife of 71 years, was the late Pauline A. (Langlais) Mathieu who died December 27, 2016.

He is survived by his children, Elaine and her husband Carlos Albuquerque of Henderson, NV, Gregory Mathieu and his wife Linda of Chapel Hill, NC, Guy Mathieu and his wife Judy of Cypress, Texas, Lynette and her husband Marvin Carron of Southbridge,  9 grandchildren, Angela Albuquerque, Chad Mathieu, Paul Mathieu, Amy Ludwig, Jaclyn Carron -Hiller, Chelsea Carron and Phillip Carron, Monica Hecker,  Brandy Gaynor, and 16 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. 
Mr. Mathieu was predeceased by his siblings, George Mathieu, Victor Mathieu, Orienda Brunelle, Violet Richard, and Annette Poirier.

Born in Southbridge, August 30, 1924 to Isaic and Orienda (Roger) Mathieu. He was a lifelong member of Notre Dame Church (St. John Paul II Parish).  He graduated from Mary E. Wells High School, Class of 1942, and attended Lake Forest College in Illinois while in the service. 
Well known locally and associated with the former Mathieu's Shoe Stores located also in Palmer, Webster, Worcester, Greenfield and Putnam, CT. 

In earlier years, he was active in many school programs, and served a term as President of the PTA of Notre Dame Schools. A longtime member of the Southridge Lions Club, he also served as President in 1981-82 helping and contributing to the welfare of his community and surrounding area. He was also a charter member of the Southbridge Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6055, and an associate member of the Southbridge Italian Club.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps, in Company D 341st Infantry Regiment. A world traveler, he and his wife Pauline visited numerous countries fulfilling their desire in traveling experiences.  He loved sports and could be seen along with Pauline at their children and grandchildren games. Norman loved and could be seen tending his flower beds and shrubs around his homes and keeping a watchful eye on his bird feeders making sure they were well fed and protected. Most of all, he loved his wife Pauline, his children and grandchildren.  His devotion and pride of family excelled and gatherings were always a source of pleasure he would look forward to.

The family would like to thank The Overlook Staff for their care and compassion.

His funeral Mass will be held at Notre Dame Church, 446 Main Street, Southbridge, on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 10AM.    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Southbridge Lions Club, P.O.Box 622, Southbridge, MA 01550.
