Maria Monseratte Alers September 25,1933 - May 11, 2026
With deep love and sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maria Monseratte Velez Alers lovingly known to many as “Mom” at the age of 92. Daughter of Higinio and Santa Velez, she was born in Isabela, PR.
Maria was predeceased by her daughters, Santa Alers and Emilia Alers and sons, Wilfredo Alers and Emilio Alers. She is survived by her son Frank Alers, daughters, Sara Alers and Hilda Alers. She also leaves behind her sisters Ana Lydia Velez, Sara Lugo and her brothers Ruben Velez and Hector Velez. Maria shared a unique bond with her grandchildren Jesus Torres, Ruben Torres, Jacqueline Fernandez and Willy Alers.
In addition, she held a very special place in the hearts of her beloved nieces and nephews, Noel Mateo, Magda Tappenden, Luz Mateo, and Domingo Mateo.
Maria was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend whose kindness, strength, and warmth touched many lives. She had a heart filled with generosity and a sincere concern and devotion to those she cared for. Her family was precious to her, and she dedicated her life to always being there for all.
Maria moved to Brooklyn, NY at the tender age of 18 where she courageously navigated life teaching herself English and building a life through her many talents and skills. She spent much of her working life at the Center of Hope serving in an administrative role. Maria enjoyed reading the Bible, watching westerns, playing Words with Friends, and spending time with her family. Most of all, she loved sharing stories of her youth, laughing and “bossing people around” with her crooked finger — something that those who knew her will always remember fondly.
Maria had a genuine love and respect for Jehovah God. She found comfort in His promises, and often spoke of her faith and love wanting to share his goodness with those around her. She valued prayer, kindness, forgiveness, and always let Him be her torch light. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her. We look forward with confidence and hope to the time when Jehovah will wipe away all tears and death will be no more.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 18th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Sansoucy Funeral Home. Burial will be Tuesday, May 19th at 11am at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
