Sturbridge ~ Kenneth A. Champeau, 70, a resident of both Sturbridge, MA and Naples, FL, died peacefully on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at Avow Hospice in Naples, FL.
Ken is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Denise M. (Renaud) Champeau. He is also survived by his son, Michael G. Champeau, USN, and his partner Jenny Wallace, of Jacksonville, FL; 2 daughters: Amanda Barbosa and her husband, Gilbert, of Orlando, FL; and Katrina Zimkiewicz and her partner, Stagne Souffrant, of Sturbridge, MA: 6 grandchildren: Jacob, Emma, Isabella, Nathalie, Renée, and Liam; 4 brothers: Ronald Champeau and his wife, Tina, of Southbridge, MA; Kevin Champeau and his partner, Jac Cuddy, of Conway, NH; Paul Champeau of Southbridge, MA; and Gregory Champeau and his wife, Kristin, of Naples, FL; 2 sisters: Lenore Brigham and her husband, Richard, of Harwich, MA/Naples, FL; and Janice Varin and her husband, Jeff, of Sugar Hill, NH; and many nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Champeau, and his sister, Patricia Champeau Snow.
Born in Southbridge, MA, on October 19, 1952, Ken was the son of the late Leonard A. and Phyllis M. (Staves) Champeau. He graduated with the class of 1970 from the former Marianhill Central Catholic High School. Ken attended the US Coast Guard Academy, and served in the Vietnam Era. He later went to work as a State Bank Examiner for both the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the FDIC. He then went to work as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chicopee Municipal Employees Credit Union. He served as a Bay Path School Committee Member, and on the Southbridge Charter Commision. He was a former member of the 2nd Town Council. He served on both the Democratic Town Committee and the Republican Town Committee; and he served as a Delegate for the National Republican Convention in 1992. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 109, serving as Adjutant for many years. He was also a Past Commander of the Franco Vets, and he was a member of the American Vets. Ken was a diehard New York Giants and New York Yankees fan, and he also was an avid American History buff, especially of the Civil War.
Ken's funeral will be Wednesday, November 30, 2022, from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA, with a Mass at 11:00AM in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main Street, Southbridge, MA. Burial will immediately follow at St. George Cemetery, Paige Hill, Southbridge. Calling hours will be Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 5-7PM at the funeral home.
