Joy Beth Charleston of Charlton, Massachusetts died on December 31, 2022, surrounded by her family, at UMass Medical Center, Worcester, Massachusetts.
Born October 21, 1935 in Hollister, Oklahoma, the second child of Glenn and Emma Lane Wint, she was 87 years old. Joy grew up on the family farm in Tillman County, Oklahoma and carried fond memories of the farm with her throughout her life. Farm life instilled in her a strong work ethic, tenacity, the ability to tackle almost any obstacle, and a love of animals.
Joy attended business school in Wichita Falls, Texas before starting her family with her then husband, Jon Charleston, in Illinois. Her career included years with the Rock Island School system and J.I. Case, a subsidiary of Tenneco, Inc. Joy retired to Leesburg, Florida for the warmer climate before moving closer to family in Massachusetts. A true competitor, Joy was happiest when involved in a sport. She was indeed an avid sportsperson, an All-State basketball player in high school who moved on to golf and bowling as an adult.
She was a very social person and loved traveling, the outdoors, birds, reading, almost any card game, and puzzles of all kinds. She was known, too, for her impish grin, sense of humor, and penchant for practical jokes.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Emma Lane Wint, and siblings Phyllis Jean Robinson and Jimmie Dale Wint. She is survived by her daughters Deborah Corriveau (Lenny) of Brimfield, Massachusetts, Janet Charleston and Carol Charleston of New York City, and her nephews Mark Robinson (Linda) of Allen, Texas and Rick Williams of Morgan Hill, California.
A capable and independent woman who retained her beautiful smile and feisty nature to the end of her life, Joy will be remembered as a beloved mother.
A Memorial Service will be held, at Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA 01550, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Foundation of America.
