Dudley ~ Eugene L. Matte, 86, of Ramshorn Road, died peacefully in his home August 7th, 2023, surrounded by his wife and family. He is survived by his children, grand-children and great grand-children, as well as his extended family of his wife's two sons and daughter and their children and grand-children.
Eugene was born in Southbridge , the son of Romeo and Antoinette (Donais) Matte. He was pre-deceased by his parents, two brothers, Normand and Gerald Matte, and two sisters, Dorothy (Matte) Lucier and Lorraine (Matte) Sniadach. Eugene was affectionately given the nickname "Molly Magee" by his sisters when he was very young and was best known by his friends as "Molly" or Gene. He was a Master Canary Breeder and had many "Best in Show" Champions. He specialized in the "Gloster Canary" and had many bird breeder friends in both the United States and Great Britain. He was a Charter Member of the National Gloster Club. He enjoyed woodworking and was an excellent carpenter. In the 1960's he was a master barber at Pio's Barber Shop in Webster, MA. He later worked as a ledge driller for Frank J. Shields Inc. of Southbridge, MA. During his life he traveled to England, Scotland, and France, as well as all four corners of the United States and Hawaii. He loved visiting his daughter Diane Blalock in Gig Harbor, Washington and particularly loved the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. He was greatly loved by all with his out-going humor and personality and will be sincerely missed by both family and friends.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge for the professional and loving care given to him during his stay in both the Emergency Room and on the Third Floor. The kind, considerate, and loving attention to his every need by Physicians, Nurses, Assistants, and all personnel was outstanding and deserves commendation. Hospice care could not have been more gracious and helpful. Thank you to all.
As per Eugene's wishes there will be no calling hours and services are private. Burial will be at New Notre Dame Cemetery on Woodstock Rd, Southbridge, MA in his family plot at the convenience of the family. Kindly consider making a memorial donation in Eugene's memory to a charity of your choice. Sansoucy Funeral Home in Southbridge will be in charge of arrangements.
