Dr. Rose K. Tharakan

Sturbridge ~ Rose K. (Moothedan) Tharakan, MD, 87, died Friday, December 3, 2021, at her home following an illness.

Born in Chalakudy, Kerela, India, she was the daughter of the late Devessay and Thresiakutty Moothedan.  She received her medical degree from the Medical School of Kasturba College in Mangalore, India in 1959, where she completed her internship.  She had postgraduate training in England and Scotland where she earned diplomas in Child Health from the Royal College of Physicians of London, and from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.  

Dr. Tharakan began her practice in the Medical Arts Building in 1972, retiring on November 1, 2012.  She came to Southbridge from Boston where she was assistant professor of pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine and also held a fellowship in Neonatology at Boston City Hospital.  During her career as a member of the medical staff of Harrington Memorial Hospital, Dr. Tharakan was also a staff member of the Boston Floating Hospital for Infants and Children and St. Margaret's Hospital in Dorcester.  She was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and held membership in the American Medical Association and Worcester District Medical Society.  She was a former vice president of the Southbridge District Medical Society.  Dr. Tharakan was also the school doctor for Tantasqua Regional High School during her career.  

Dr. Tharakan's husband of almost 52 years, Kurian A. Tharakan, died October 20, 2020.  She is survived by her sons Abraham Tharakan of Worcester, MA, and David Tharakan, MD, of San Antonio, TX; two grandsons, Joshua and Jonathan Tharakan of San Antonio, TX; and two sisters, Lilly Joseph and Mary Paul. 

She was a member of St. Anne's Church in Fiskdale, MA.  Among her hobbies, she especially enjoyed traveling, shopping and cooking.  

The funeral Mass will be Friday, December 17, 2021, at 12Noon, St. Anne's Church, 16 Church Street, Fiskdale, MA 01518.  PLEASE MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH.  Burial will immediately follow at St. Anne's Cemetery, Arnold Road, Sturbridge, MA.  A calling period at the funeral home will be held Thursday, December 16, 2021, from 5-6:30PM.  MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED AT THE FUNERAL HOME AND MASS.   Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA 01550 is assisting the family with arrangements.
