Dorothy Stewart Wright, age 95, died Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Quaboag Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Care Center. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas James Stewart and Nancy Jane (Mitchell) of Springfield, MA. Her husband Wendell Lewis Wright died August 16, 2016.
Dorothy is predeceased by her only child Linda Opal Gaines Hailey, of Middleboro, who died August 23, 2018. She is survived by her two grandchildren, Rael Darius Hailey of Brockton, and Rachel Desiree Hailey of North Adams; and two great grandchildren Theodore Thomas James Hailey of Brockton, and Aria Sioux Maestri-Hailey of North Adams, and her nephew Christopher Smith of Rockville, MD, and many close cousins.She was predeceased also by her sister Frances Stewart Smith of Washington, DC, and Thomas James Stewart Cortez of Los Angeles, CA.
She attended Springfield Public Schools, graduated from Springfield Technical High School, and continued her education at Oberlin College, Oberlin Ohio. Dorothy returned to Springfield where she enrolled and graduated from American International College. Dorothy was a life long learner who also attended Clark University, majoring in computer science, and taught many of these skills to newly arriving immigrants living within the Sturbridge, Worcester area. She was a very active member in the Massachusetts Teacher's Association, and the Nation Education Association.
Mrs.Wright was a former educator, and taught for many years in the Auburn Public School System at Pakachoag Elementary School. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, braiding rugs, tailoring, and quilting. She received numerous awards for excellence within all these areas. She was awarded a Blue Ribbon from the Eastern States Exposition, for her room size braided wool rug that she had submitted for judging.
Mrs.Wright was a former longtime active member of the United Congregational Church, Institute Road Worcester, MA. and a member of the Eastern Star, Sumner Chapter in Springfield. Her most recent membership was with the Rotary Club of Sturbridge. She received two prestigious awards for her service, the Rotary Zone Literacy Award and the Multiple Paul Harris Fellowship.
A prayer service with Pastor Brae Adams will be held at 11 AM, October 5, 2023, at Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA 015550. Burial will follow at 1 PM. at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA.
