Webster - Arthur J. Meredith, 98, died peacefully on Saturday, September 20th, at The Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester after an illness. His beloved wife of 62 years, Gertrude (Livernois) Meredith, predeceased him on January 10th, 2020. She was the love of his life, and he missed her every day.
He is survived by his son Brian Meredith and his wife Deborah of Warren; daughters Mary Ann Welsch and her husband Jochen of Hardwick, and Margaret Sbordy and her husband Barry of Woodstock; three granddaughters: Meredith Sbordy and her partner Michael Montanari, Lauren Cassidy and her husband Thomas, and Madeleine Welsch and her partner Greyson Abid. He leaves behind the light of his life, his great-grandson Henry Arthur Cassidy. He also leaves a beloved sister-in-law, Louise Lavallee and her husband Robert, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in New York City in 1927 to Irene Meredith, and grandson of Delia (Carroll) and John Meredith, Arthur came to live in Southbridge after one blind date changed his life forever. He watched that young woman walk over the hill towards him and declared he would marry her one day. He did just that. His utter devotion to her never waned.
Mr. Meredith was a longtime Sergeant of Security at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. While this was his job, the work of his heart came after he retired. He began volunteering at what was then the Providence House Nursing Home in Southbridge, spending at least three days a week bringing companionship, prayer, and communion to the elderly. His dedication to this ministry and to the homebound of his local parish (now St. John Paul II) earned him a unanimous vote to receive the Dr. Nero W. Pioppi Award in 1997 for community service. In addition to this ministry, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, an instructor in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program, and a regular lector at the then Notre Dame Parish in Southbridge. His quiet devotion to his faith was an inspiration to many.
Arthur was an avid reader, a consummate storyteller, and a lover of music and theater. He deeply treasured every moment spent with his family. His faith and his family enriched his life and sustained him until the end.
His family would like to thank the residents and staff of Christopher Heights in Webster for their friendship and care over the last several years. We would also like to thank his doctors and nurses in both Webster and Southbridge, and the wonderful staff at Rose Monahan Hospice in Worcester.
The funeral will be held on Monday, September 29th, from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy Street, Southbridge, with the funeral mass at 11:00 AM at St. Louis Church, 15 Lake Street, Webster, with Fr.
